FEATURED AUTHOR: D.E. HAGGERTY

ABOUT THE BOOK

I know who you really are.

Pru has a secret, which she has no plans to reveal – ever. But after a woman is murdered and all clues point to her, she has no choice but to disclose her true identity. When her revelations thwart the killer’s plan to frame Pru for murder, the killer begins stalking her. With each note he sends, he gets closer. The police are stumped. Pru wants to run away. She really, really wants to run, but Ajax has found the woman of his dreams, and he’s not letting her go anywhere. He can be patient. In the meantime, he’ll protect her with his life. Pru isn’t feeling very patient, and her friends, Mel and Terri, are definitely not willing to wait until the police discover who the stalker is. The three friends take matters into their own hands and jump headfirst into the investigation.

Will Pru and her friends uncover her stalker before he turns his violence on Pru?

IFs ANDs OR WHATs INTERVIEW WITH D.E. HAGGERTY

If you could talk to someone, who would it be and what would you ask them?
Nelson Mandela. I want to ask him how he managed to stay peaceful after his release from prison. I’m not sure I would have had the strength of character to not completely lose it against my former oppressors.

If you could live in any time period which would it be?
I’ve always been fascinated with the 1960s. And no, I’m not talking about free love, or at least not only about free love. I love the idea of how politically active everyone was. And the music… sigh… was awesome.

If you could be anything besides a writer, what would it be?
A researcher. I love to spend hours and hours in the library leafing through old books. I’d even return to the law if I only had to do research. Please don’t make me talk to clients.

If you had to do community service (or already do volunteer work), what would you choose?
I do quite a bit of volunteer work. For the second year in a row, I’m helping to put on a benefit to raise funds for a local charity.

If you could choose a fictional town to live in what would it be and from what book?
Tomahawk from the Wild Ones series from C.M. Owens. I think I would fit right in with the crazy folks in this place.

Ands

5 things you need in order to write: coffee, notebooks, favorite pen, super strong computer glasses, and sleep.
5 things you love about writing: world building, using my imagination, being creative, setting my own hours, and the challenges that come with trying to market a book.
5 things you love about where you live: multi-cultural, multilinguistic, cultural, affordable and near the beach.
5 things you never want to run out of:  paper for the printer, ink for the printer, post-its, milk for my coffee, and coffee.
5 things about you or 5 words to describe you: loudmouth, nerd, book loving, introvert, and opinionated.
5 things you always put in your books: laughter, romance, witty dialogue, mystery, and a hot guy.
5 favorite places you’ve been: Egypt, Buenos Aires, Angor Wat, Beijing, Rome and Prague.

Whats

What’s your all-time favorite movie?
Elf. It doesn’t matter how many times I see it, it always makes me laugh and get that ‘Christmas’-feeling.

What’s your all-time favorite library?
Alexandria. It’s new and modern but gives a nod to the ancient library.

What’s your favorite/most visited Internet site?
Funda. It’s a Dutch real estate site. I love house porn.

What’s your favorite time of day?

Early morning when dawn is yet to break, and the world is yet to wake up. It’s quiet and peaceful.

What’s your favorite thing to do?

Read!

What’s your favorite snack?
I love Twizzlers. I can’t get them in Holland, though.

What’s your favorite beverage?
Diet Coke. It’s an addiction I have no intention of breaking.

What’s your favorite ice cream?
Karamel Sutra from Ben & Jerry’s. I LOVE caramel. Unfortunately (or should I say fortunately?), I can only find this flavor at the expat store, and it costs an arm and leg to buy a pint.

What’s your favorite candy bar?
Peanut butter cups. It’s the one thing I can’t live without. Thankfully, you can now buy them in The Netherlands. Maybe that’s not a good thing.

What’s your favorite movie snack?
Popcorn. Nice and salty. They have sweet popcorn here. Just with sugar. It’s weird.

What’s your favorite social media site? Would you rather tweet or post on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest . . .?
I’ve actually fallen in love with Instagram. I like scrolling through all the pictures. I like to think my pictures are getting better as well.

What’s one thing you never leave the house without?
My phone. Super handy when you fall and break your leg. You can use an app to order a taxi to the emergency room.

What’s your latest recommendation for:
Food: Corn cakes. They’ll like rice cakes but made with popped corn instead of rice. Super healthy and filling for those of us on yet another diet.
Music: I’m late to the party with this one, but I just discovered James Lawson. If you love singer/songwriters, you need to check him out.
Movie: The Green Book. This movie gave viewers a glimpse into a time period filled with racial tensions, and the acting was sublime.
Book: I finally got around to reading The Mars Room from Rachel Kushner. I think everyone should read it.
Audiobook: I can’t listen to books. I forget I’m listening to a book and don’t pay attention.
TV: Don’t laugh, but I’m totally obsessed with 90 Days to Wed. Being married to a foreigner myself, I can totally relate to many of the issues these couples wrestle with.
Netflix/Amazon Prime: Sex Education. This series is hilarious. It perfectly captures what it’s like to be a teenager.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

D.E. Haggerty grew up reading everything she could get her grubby hands on, from her mom's Harlequin romances, to Nancy Drew, to Little Women. When she wasn't flipping pages in a library book, she was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing her of free time to write and read, although on the odd occasion she did manage to sneak a book into her rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. After surviving the army experience, she went back to school and got her law degree. She jumped ship and joined the hubby in the Netherlands before the graduation ceremony could even begin. A few years into her legal career, she was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. She quit her job and sat down to write a manuscript, which she promptly hid in the attic before returning to the law. But practicing law really wasn’t her thing, so she quit (again!) and went off to Germany to start a B&B. Turns out running a B&B wasn’t her thing either. I polished off that manuscript languishing in the attic before following the husband to Istanbul where she decided to give the whole writer-thing a go. But ten years was too many to stay away from her adopted home. She packed up again and moved to The Hague where, in between tennis matches and failing to save the world, she's currently working on her next book. She hopes she’ll always be working on her next book.
Hide Not Seek is her fifteenth novel.

ABOUT THE BOOK

A picture tells a story. But is it the truth?

And she certainly didn’t kill her supposed stalker – as if. But Mel – always up for a bit of drama – jumps at the chance to go search for the real killer. When Mel’s ex-boyfriend, Owen, discovers her plans, he pulls out all the stops to ensure she’s safe and to win her back. No matter what happens with the murder investigation, he’s not letting her go. With the police setting their sights on Mel, he may need to jeopardize his own career on the police force to protect her.

Will Mel find the real killer before the detectives arrest her for murder?

INTERVIEW WITH D.E. HAGGERTY

Q: Dena, what’s the story behind the title of your book?
A:
The story of Picture Not Perfect revolves around a pair of detectives finding pictures of the heroine, Melanie, at the home of her murdered colleague. Based on the pictures, the detectives believe Melanie was involved in the murder. But is this the truth? They say every picture tells a story. A picture may tell a story, but that doesn’t mean the story it tells is the truth. I, therefore, took the saying "Picture Perfect" and turned it a bit around to Picture Not Perfect.

Q: Tell us about your series. Is this book a standalone, or do readers need to read the series in order?
A
: Picture Not Perfect is the second book in the Not So Reluctant Detective series. All books in the series are standalones. They don’t need to be read in order. The series revolves around three friends, Terri, Melanie, and Pru, who all somehow find themselves in the middle of murder investigations.

Q: Where’s home for you?
A:
Home is currently The Hague in the Netherlands.

Q: Where did you grow up?
A:
I grew up in Wisconsin, but since I left at the age of seventeen and decades have since passed, Wisconsin no longer feels like home.

Q: What do you love about where you live?
A:
I love how international the Hague is. I can literally hear five different languages while shopping at the corner store. This lends itself to some great cultural opportunities as well. Cultural fairs, speakers, exhibitions, etc.

Q: What is the most daring thing you've done?
A:
I snuck off and joined the military. Huh. I’m not sure if that’s the most daring or the most stupid thing I’ve ever done.

Q: It's amazing how often those two go hand in hand! How did you meet your husband?
A:
I met my husband while I was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany with the US Army. He was with the Dutch military, and we were both seconded to NATO. My girlfriend was actually interested in him at first. I arranged an introduction, but she said he was too short for her! I didn’t mind how tall he was. He made me laugh.

Q: If you could only save one thing from your house, what would it be?
A:
I have a box of important stuff. It has everything in it from my baptism outfit to pictures to report cards to my discharge papers from the military.

Q: What’s one of your favorite quotes?
A:
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
― Robert Frost

Q: What would your main character say about you?
A:
I think Melanie and I would get along smashingly. She’d probably say I should read less and go to yoga class with her. Not going to happen.

Q: I hear you! One of your characters has just found out you’re about to kill him off. He decides to beat you to the punch. How would he kill you?
A:
I think Alfred Schultz, the murder victim in Picture Perfect, would put a poisonous snake in my bed. He’s an incredibly sneaky man and very tenacious. He’d probably stalk me to find out my greatest fear (snakes) and end me that way. And now, I’m glad I managed to kill him off first because that’s just plain mean!

Q: Those are the best kinds of characters to kill off! What book are you currently reading and in what format?
A:
I’m reading A Gentleman in Moscow in paperback. I usually read eBooks, but the paperback was only a dollar more than the eBook. In that case, I prefer to hold the paperback in my hands. I’m loving the story, by the way. I’m addicted to Russian literature, and this book is reminiscent of those great Russian novelists.

Q: What’s one pet peeve you have when you read?
A:
I hate inconsistencies. For example, a character claims: “We need to buy a coffee table” and in the next sentence is setting a drink down on the coffee table. What coffee table???

Q: Do you have a routine for writing?
A:
Yes! I think it’s important for all writers to have a routine. I write every morning first thing. The dog has to wait for his walk until I’ve finished a chapter in my novel.

Q: Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?
A:
I like it when it’s dark and I’m writing in my lonesome while the world sleeps. I have a bedroom in our house I’ve converted into an office, and I do all of my writing there. The idea of writing at a coffee shop is appealing, but I’m too lazy to get out of my pjs and drag my stuff to a shop.

Q: What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received about your writing?
A: My mother-in-law told me reading Buried Appearances was like being back in Holland during the war. Since Buried Appearances is a historical novel centered around the Second World War, I couldn’t ask for a better compliment.

Q: What are you working on now?
A
: Book 3 of The Not So Reluctant Detective series. This installment of the series will feature a girlfriend of the protagonist of book 2. She’s got a secret. A big secret. I can’t wait to slowly reveal it. It’s not what readers think.

The Gray-Haired Knitting Detectives aren’t about to let one of their own get sent to the slammer and jump at the chance to search for the true killer. As if Dee doesn’t have enough problems, the knitting detectives decide that Delilah being a widow is the perfect opportunity to find her a new man and decide to put their matchmaking skills to use. Will Dee end up in prison for a murder she didn’t commit or will she be taking another walk down the aisle?

INTERVIEW WITH D.E. HAGGERTY

How long is your to-be-read list?
I actually have two TBR lists. One is for books that I’m reading and reviewing for other authors. I’ve learned – the hard way – to try and keep that list down to one or two books a week and only agree to reviews for the next two months. I can’t even tell you how long my private TBR list is because it’s like ginormous. I have at least 5 pages of samples on my kindle at any one time. I should probably start a support group but who has time with a TBR list like that?

What other books do you currently have published?
Unforeseen Consequences -
Buried Appearances / Begraven in het Verleden
Life Discarded
Murder, Mystery & Dating Mayhem
Jack Gets His Man

How often do you tweet?
Too often for my own good! I belong to a group of writers that help each other by tweeting about each other’s books, etc. And then I try to tweet daily about my own reading blog, Readsalot. It can be a bit overwhelming.

How do you feel about Facebook?
I have mixed feelings. I am (or I guess was) a huge defender of Facebook. I even wrote a blog entitled In Defense of Facebook. But then I got angry with them. It’s just ridiculous that a blog post I tell my readers about on Facebook is delivered to less than 1% of my followers. Grrr . . .

3D movies are . . .
Should be illegal! I’m extremely far-sighted and wear bifocals, which means I have little to no depth perception. 3D movies are wasted on me, and I hate those plastic 3D glasses, which I have to place over my own glasses as I can’t wear contacts.

If you had a swear jar, would it be full?
Totally! My husband jokes that sailors run out of bars when my mouth gets started.

What's your relationship with your TV remote?
A bit scary. The remote doesn’t work very often (we have TV via the Internet and the Internet in Turkey can be notoriously slow so that those pesky government officials have enough to peek over our shoulders). I may or may not be famous for throwing the darn remote across the living room.

Do you spend more on clothes or food?
Food (and alcohol)! I don’t follow fashions at all and am perfectly happy to stay in my pjs all day, but I’m a complete foodie. The hubby and I go out to eat a few times a week. We’re a little limited on ethnic foods in Istanbul, but that doesn’t slow us down – much.

What's your favorite treat for movie night?

Popcorn! I LOVE popcorn, but when I make it at home I do the ‘healthy’ thing – air popper and just a bit of melted margarine. When I’m at the movies, I get the ‘real’ thing. Yummy!

What would your main character say about you?
Dee would probably think my mouth is way too big and I’m a bit too opinionated. That notwithstanding, I’m sure we’d be good friends. Well, until I drag her to the crowded bar for girls’ night out. That’d probably annoy her.

Where is your favorite library, and what do you love about it?
The library in Alexandria. It’s just completely and totally awesome. On the outside it has words engraved in all written languages of the world. It has great big windows looking out into the sea. It’s so big that there are nooks and crannies everywhere – a true library-lover’s paradise. Plus I’m a total history geek so the fact that it stands on or near the original library, which is one of the wonders of the ancient world, totally does it for me.

What are you working on now?
Now that the Gray-Haired Knitting Detectives series is over, I’m starting on a romantic comedy. I had a lot of fun and lots of great comments on the light-hearted series and thought I’d keep going with that. Here’s a bit of a teaser:

Molly’s life is in the crapper. Her husband left her for another woman and she had to leave her job to go back home and help her sick dad. She enters the dating world and discovers dating is not all it’s cracked up to be.

Lightning round:
Cake or frosting? Frosting! Yummy! I’ll just use my finger.
Laptop or desktop? Laptop. Does anyone – besides government employees – use a desktop anymore?
Chevy Chase or Bill Murray? Bill Murray. They both drive me crazy, but Chevy Chase drives me completely crazy.
Emailing or texting? Texting because I’m too lazy to write emails.
Indoors or outdoors? Indoors with a book, comfy chair, and huge cup of coffee.
Tea: sweet or unsweet? Sweet, hot, and biological. Surprised you there, didn’t I?
Plane, train, or automobile? Anything that's fast works for me!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

D.E. Haggerty was born and raised in Wisconsin, but thinks she's a European (and has the EU passport to prove it!). After spending her senior year of high school in Germany, she developed a bad case of wanderlust that is yet to be cured. Her flying Dutch husband and she have lived in Ohio, Virginia, the Netherlands, Germany, and now Istanbul. They still haven’t decided if we want to settle down somewhere – let alone where. She's leaning toward somewhere she can learn to surf even though the hubby thinks that’s a less than sound way to decide where to live. Although she's been a military policewoman, a commercial lawyer, and a B&B owner, she thinks with writing she may have finally figured out what she wants to be when she grows up. That’s assuming she ever grows up, of course. Between playing tennis, running much slower than she would like, trying to adopt every stray dog within a 5-mile radius, traveling to exotic new locales, singing off tune, drinking entirely too many adult beverages, addictively watching new movies, and reading books like they are going out of style, she writes articles for a local expat magazine and various websites, reviews other indie authors’ books, writes a blog about whatever comes to mind, and is working on her seventh book.
