FEATURED AUTHOR: JULIE MULHERN

ABOUT THE BOOK

When Ellison Russell is nearly killed at a benefactors’ party, she brushes the incident aside as an unhappy accident. But when her house is fire-bombed, she’s shot at, and the person sitting next to her at a gala is poisoned, she must face facts. Someone wants her dead. But why? And can Ellison find the killer before he strikes again?

Add in an estranged sister, a visiting aunt with a shocking secret, and a handsome detective staying in her guesthouse, and Ellison might need more than cream in her coffee.

INTERVIEW WITH JULIE MULHERN

Julie, do you have a writing routine?
The alarm goes off every day around five. The awful thing is that I’m usually awake long before the alarm goes off. I stumble downstairs, push the button on the coffee maker, let the dog out, then write.

Do you write every day?
I do. Every day. On weekends I sleep in until six or so.

Whoa! Go wild! How often do you read?
I read whenever I can. I love mysteries, biographies, and history.

What do you think makes a good story?
I love a story with compelling characters, a killer plot, and lots of laughs.

What books do you currently have published?
Clouds in my Coffee is the third book in the Country Club Murders series. The fourth book will release in October.

Do you have any marketing tips you could pass on to indie authors?
Be present, be real, and don’t be afraid to tell people about your book if they ask. That said, don’t be that person—the one who says, “Nice to meet you, buy my book!”

If you could only watch one television station for a year, what would it be?

Can I say Netflix?

Absolutely! How often do you tweet?
I tweet everyday. I’m boring. Don’t bother.

How do you feel about Facebook?
I love Facebook and post pictures from the seventies, songs, bad advertising, bad clothes and fun memories.

What scares you the most?

I am terrified of snakes.

What five things would you never want to live without?
I need my Kindle, my phone, coffee, cream, and wine.

What’s one thing you never leave the house without?
I’d like to say my keys, but the truth is I forget them all the time.

What’s your favorite fast food?

I could eat a burrito bowl from Chipotle every day.

What’s your favorite beverage?
Wine or coffee? Wine or coffee? Coffee. Definitely coffee. Or wine.

Name one thing you’re really really bad at.
I have a terrible memory. Seriously. What was the question?

What do you wish you could do?
I wish I could travel more.

What do you like to do when there’s nothing to do?

Have I mentioned Netflix?

Point taken.
Would you rather be a movie star, sports star, or rock star?
Movie star, no one wants to hear me sing.

What’s in your refrigerator right now?
Wine, cream for my coffee, blackberries, raspberries, yogurt, almond milk, lunch meat, and sour dough bread.

What’s one of your favorite quotes?
"In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer." — Camus

Who is your favorite fictional character?

I am quite fond of Davis Way who is written by Gretchen Archer.

What’s your favorite song?
Today, it’s "Year of the Cat" by Al Stewart.

FEATURED AUTHOR: JULIE MULHERN

ABOUT THE BOOK

With his dying breath, Bobby Lowell begs Ellison Russell, “Tell her I love her.”

Unable to refuse, Ellison struggles to find the girl the murdered boy loved. Too bad an epically bad blind date, a vindictive graffiti artist, and multiple trips to the emergency room keep getting in the way.

Worse, a killer has Ellison in his sights, her newly rebellious daughter is missing, and there’s yet another body in her hostas. Mother won’t be pleased.

Now Ellison must track down not one but two runaway teenagers, keep her promise to Bobby, and elude the killer — all before her next charity gala committee meeting.

INTERVIEW WITH JULIE MULHERN

Julie, what's your favorite thing about the writing process?
Having written.

How long is your to-be-read list?

I can’t see the end.

What books do you currently have published?

Two mysteries, The Deep End and Guaranteed to Bleed (look for Clouds in My Coffee late next spring) and a historical romantic-suspense, A Haunting Desire.

You have a day job . . . how do you find time to write?

I get up very early and write for a few hours before I go to work.

What scares you the most?

Snakes. I hate snakes. When I was a kid my father cut a copperhead in half with a hoe. The parts slithered their separate ways. Ever since then . . . *shudder*

What five things would you never want to live without?
Coffee, cream, wine, my family, and my books.

3D movies are . . . awful. They give me a headache.

If you had a swear jar, would it be full?
Nearly empty.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert?

Introvert.

What's your relationship with your TV remote?
I don’t have one. I never see the remote. My husband and kids make sure of that.

What’s one of your favorite quotes?

“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” ~ Albert Camus and “What fresh hell is this?” ~Dorothy Parker

What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to write?
Sex scenes.

Why?
Because I thought my father might read them.

Where is your favorite library, and what do you love about it?
The Kansas City Library. Have you seen the parking lot?

That's awesome!
You can be any fictional character for one day. Who would you be? Harriet Vane.

What's your relationship with your cell phone?
It is close and personal.

How many hours of sleep do you get a night?

Never enough.

What is your favorite movie?
Casablanca.

Do you sweat the small stuff?

Nope. Never.

How long is your to-do list?
It’s longer than my TBR list.

What are you working on now?
Clouds in My Coffee, book three of the Country Club Murders.

Lightning round:
Cake or frosting? Cake
Laptop or desktop? Laptop
Chevy Chase or Bill Murray? Bill Murray
Emailing or texting? Email
Indoors or outdoors? Indoors
Tea: sweet or unsweet? unsweet
Plane, train, or automobile? Automobile

Featured Author: Julie Mulhern

About the book:

Swimming into the lifeless body of her husband’s mistress tends to ruin a woman’s day, but becoming a murder suspect can ruin her whole life.

It’s 1974 and Ellison Russell’s life revolves around her daughter and her art. She’s long since stopped caring about her cheating husband, Henry, and the women with whom he entertains himself. That is, until she becomes a suspect in Madeline Harper’s death. The murder forces Ellison to confront her husband’s proclivities and his crimes—kinky sex, petty cruelties and blackmail.

As the body count approaches par on the seventh hole, Ellison knows she has to catch a killer. But with an interfering mother, an adoring father, a teenage daughter, and a cadre of well-meaning friends demanding her attention, can Ellison find the killer before he finds her?

Interview with Julie Mulhern

Julie, what’s the story behind the title of your book?
The Deep End is – hopefully – punny. My heroine swims into a body in the deep end of a pool, or it could have something to do with the end of someone’s life.

Tell us about your series.
The Deep End is the first book in The Country Club Murders. The books revolve around the country club set in 1974 Kansas City. The second book, Guaranteed to Bleed, will release in October of this year.

Where’s home for you?
I am a Kansas Citian, born and raised.

If you had $100 a week to spend on yourself, what would you buy?

Books. Or, I might save up for a really nice handbag.

What do you love about where you live?

My roots run deep in Kansas City. Fifth generation. I live within a mile or two of the house my great-great grandfather built in 1858.

I love the art, the food and the friendliness of my city.

What’s one thing that you wish you knew as a teenager that you know now?

To pick nice boys over naughty ones.

Amen, sister! What makes you happy?
My husband, my children, fresh snow, spring breezes, a good margarita, and a good book.

Do you have another job outside of writing?
I work as a fundraiser for a not-for-profit that helps people who live with serious or chronic illness.

How did you meet your husband? Was it love at first site?
I met my husband at a party, and it was love at first sight. We’ll celebrate our twentieth anniversary this October.

What’s one of your favorite quotes?
How about two? Okay!

"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer." -Albert Camus

If you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best. - Marilyn Monroe

If you could live anywhere in the world, where in the world would it be?
Right where I am. That said, world travel sounds delightful.

What’s one pet peeve you have when you read?
Being interrupted.

Do you have a routine for writing?
I get up very early every morning, push the button on the coffee maker, and write before I go to work. Like Jessica Fletcher, I write at my kitchen table.

On weekends, I grab my laptop and go to the library or a coffee shop.

What would your dream office look like?
It would have a view of verdant hills and forests and maybe a lake and a mountain or two – which would be odd given that Kansas City is perched on the edge of the plains.

How did you find Henery Press, and how long did your query process take?
I was incredibly lucky in that The Deep End found a home with Henery Press very quickly. It was out on submission for only a few months.

What are you working on now?
I am working on edits for Guaranteed to Bleed as well as edits for a historical romance set in 1902 New Orleans that will release in August from Entangled Select. I’m also writing the second book in the historical series. When that is finished in May, I’ll roll up my sleeves and start the third Country Club murder.
