FEATURED AUTHOR: SHELLEY NOBLE

Miss Fisher meets Downton Abbey in Tell Me No Lies, part of the critically acclaimed Lady Dunbridge Mystery series from New York Times bestselling author Shelley Noble.

Rise and shine, Countess, you’re about to have a visitor.

Lady Dunbridge was not about to let a little thing like the death of her husband ruin her social life. She’s come to New York City, ready to take the dazzling world of Gilded Age Manhattan by storm. The social events of the summer have been amusing but Lady Phil is searching for more excitement---and she finds it, when an early morning visitor arrives, begging for her help. After all, Lady Phil has been known to be useful in a crisis. Especially when the crisis involves the untimely death of a handsome young business tycoon.

His death could send another financial panic through Wall Street and beyond.

With the elegant Plaza Hotel, Metropolitan Museum of Art and the opulent mansions of Long Island’s Gold Coast as the backdrop, romance, murder, and scandals abound. Someone simply must do something. And Lady Dunbridge is happy to oblige.

Ifs

Q: If you could live in any time period which would it be?
A: The 20s, because the clothes. When I was a kid we used to sneak up to the attic where there was  a trunk of carefully preserved  sequined dresses and feathers and head bands.  They  were the most exotic things we had ever seen.

Q: If you could be anything besides a writer, what would it be?
A: What I really love to do is research, not modern research but delving into the past. I think I would have been perfect as a nineteenth century researcher, organizing some eccentric’s library, discovering long lost facts in the shelves of musty tomes. Maybe even uncovering  a secret of the ages or two. It would be hard on the sinuses but so worth it.

Q: If you had to do community service, what would you choose?
A: I like working with people of all ages whether reading or movement. My first career was that of professional dancer, and I worked with special needs, adult rehab, migrant framers children, teenagers. Anything that opens people to a new experience, one that lights up their world, and mine.

Q: If you could meet any author for coffee, who would you like to meet and what would you talk about?
A: Mary Stewart, who wrote the most engrossing romantic suspense. We’d talk about how she manages to keep you riveted to the page or audio, with just the power of her words, no (not too many) high speed car chases, or massive weaponry, no martial arts, stalking psychopaths, just the complete mastery of the telling. I try to read at least sections of her books every few months, just to remember her mastery of storytelling.

Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where in the world would it be?
A: In my wish-I-could-live-there moments, I would love to live in Cornwall. It really feels like the end of the world. There’s an actual point called Land’s End, and when you’re standing on the cliffs, you feel that the sea could gone on forever. Then there’s Penzance, as in the Pirates of . . . Oh, and my favorite town ever, Mousehole (pronounced Mowzel) that is the setting of one of my kids’ and my favorite children’s books, The Mousehole Cat, and also the home of Stargazey Pie, which no, I’ve never eaten, even in Mousehole, and the Minarck Theatre carved into the side of the cliff and overlooking the sea. So many wonderful magical places, and people, and such history. Amazing.

Movie: Just discovered the 2012 made for TV movie, Restless, with Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Rufus Sewell, Charlotte Rampling, and Michael Gambon. So exciting.
Book: I just read an advanced copy of Anna Lee Huber’s A Penny for Your Secrets. Really enjoyed it.
Audiobook: Relistening to The Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters. Barbara Rosenblatt captures all the characters perfectly. What fun they had.
TV: Shakespeare and Hathaway.
Netflix/Amazon Prime: On Netflix, I love, love, love, The Great British Baking Show. I’ve also been watching lots of 30s and 40s black and white mysteries on Prime. So simple and the actors had such personality.
Miscellaneous: Take time to stop and listen, see and feel your surroundings for a few minutes, or even a few seconds. Even the tiniest things can seem wonderful if you take the time to notice.
