LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT WITH BURT WEISSBOURD

A few of your favorite things: time with my wife, my family, my border collie mix Sady, and fly fishing.
Things you need to throw out: the fox who often comes to my backyard and taunts Sady, the shoes in my closet that I’ve only worn once in ten years but can’t bring myself to throw out.

Things you love about writing: being able to think about issues I want to think about, creating characters that surprise me, and characters that go in directions I didn’t expect
Things you hate about writing: I don’t think there’s anything I don’t like about writing, except maybe that I don’t have enough time to write as often as I’d like.

Easiest thing about being a writer: the easiest thing for me is the actual writing. I try to write every day.

Hardest thing about being a writer: not having enough time to write as often as I’d like.

Things you love about where you live: I love living on the water and having commuting access to New York City.
Things that make you want to move: being too far from New York City restaurants, theatre, music, etc.

Words that describe you: introspective, sensitive, insightful.
Words that describe you but you wish they didn’t: very forthcoming, outspoken.

Favorite foods: all kinds of barbeque and wild game.
Things that make you want to throw up: tripe, and though it’s an unpopular opinion . . . avocado.

Something you’re really good at: working hard, explaining complex subjects, and managing others productively.

Something you’re really bad at: saying no to my children and particularly my grandchildren and not feeding Sady extra treats.

Something you like to do: I’ve always wanted to go on safari in Africa.
Something you wish you’d never done: times I wish I hadn’t been so straightforward.

Things you’d walk a mile for:
great company.
Things that make you want to run screaming from the room: rude, inappropriate company will always make me want to run screaming from the room, though I generally refrain from doing so.

Things you always put in your books: I always like to include interesting characters, both protagonists and antagonists.

Things you never put in your books: I always avoid one-dimensional, heavy-handed characters, particularly villains. I really try to make my villains understandable, even if they’re not likeable.

Things to say to an author: you like their writing.
Things to say to an author if you want to be fictionally killed off in their next book: you don’t like their writing. Unsolicited writing advice.

EXCERPT FROM INSIDE PASSAGE

“Wouldn’t you like to get married in your own backyard?”

“Of course I would. You know that,” she snapped. “But I can’t.”

“Why not? Because Nick Season says you can’t. You have the right to live the life you want to live. Don’t give it up for that son of a bitch. Hell no. You don’t have to do that.” Abe leaned closer. There it was, those laser-like light blue eyes. “It won’t be easy, but together, we can figure out what to do. You and I can do this. We have to.”

“My God, what are you thinking? This isn’t like psycho-therapy.” She held his eyes. “We can’t ‘figure it out’ or ‘work on it.’ It’s not a head game. We have no evidence. Nothing. Nick’s a foolproof liar and a stone-cold killer. And he’s going to be Washington’s state attorney general.”

“And he has to be stopped.” Abe looked into their fire. “It’s not just about what you’d have to give up … think about what he’ll do if he ever finds out that you and Billy are alive. And though you might be okay for a year, or even two, eventually, he’ll start to wonder. And then to worry. It’s who he is. You’ve told me that. And then he’ll never stop checking. He’ll have me followed. Every year, he’ll run your prints, and Billy’s, through some Canadian database. And that’s just the beginning … unless we stop him.”

“And how do you propose to do that?”

Abe’s bushy brows furrowed in a “V” until they almost touched. “I understand the problem now.” They touched. Corey had never seen that. Very cool. He meant business. He turned to her, full face. “To begin, I’ll comb my hair and look this devil in his shiny black eyes.”

What? What was that? Corey was dumbstruck. Eventually, she softly mouthed, “What?” And louder, before he could answer, “Aren’t you afraid of him?”

“He’s very frightening, and I’m painfully aware of what’s at stake. And of course I see how very dangerous he is and yes, that scares me.” He scowled. “But I have other feelings that are even stronger than my fear.”

“What does that mean?”

“What I’m afraid of, what keeps me up at night, is losing you. Nick wants to kill the person I love most in the world. That makes him my archenemy, my nemesis. What I feel for Nick is inexhaustible rage.” He tapped his pipe against the log, emptying it into the sand, then he carefully set it down. When he looked up, his expression had turned fierce. Abe took both of her hands. “Nick Season be damned!”

“You’re being crazy.” She had never seen Abe like this.

“No, I’m telling you how I feel. I want to marry you Corey. I want to live with you and Billy in Seattle. I want to go to parent night at Billy’s school. I want to take you guys to dinner at Tulio and for pizza at Via Tribunali. I want to fish at your favorite spots near Bainbridge —”

“He’ll kill us all.” And Abe was really scaring her.

“I have to keep that from happening.”

“This isn’t a storybook. Nick isn’t like anyone you know. And this isn’t an insight kind of deal. Look what happened the last time you tried to help. They almost got Billy, and I had to kill someone. Look what almost happened last night. This time you and Billy and I, we could all die. Do you understand that?”

“Yes, I do. But I won’t let that happen.”

“Won’t let that happen?”

“No, I won’t.”

“How?”

“I’m working on that. “

“Working on it? How? You’re going to comb your hair? Look this devil in his shiny black eyes? What is that about?”

Abe considered her question. “It’s a way of starting.”

Corey put her head in her hands. She didn’t know what to say.

READ AN EXCERPT

The room empties until there’s no one left but a few people snoring. Pen stays put too, standing across from me. Her cheeks are flushed from the alcohol, her expression stoic.
“Should we call it a tie?” I say.
She slides a shot glass over to me. “There’s no such thing.”
“Okay…” I reach for the coin. “Call it.”
She calls heads. She wins.
I try to steady my voice. “Go easy on me.”
“Truth or dare.”
“Truth.” It’s the only game I want to play with her.
“Okay. Where are you from? Originally?”
I sigh, relieved. “Puebla. I moved here when I was twelve.”
“My turn,” she says, not wasting any time.
“Truth or Dare,” I counter.
“Truth.” The question immediately forms on my tongue—who are you…really?—but it’s too harsh, almost accusatory. I mull over the words again and finally settle on, “Are you really as brave as you seem?”
She doesn’t smile. “Yes. And no. Your turn.”
“Truth,” I say. “Are you as cool, calm, and collected as you seem?”
I huff out a laugh. “Sometimes.”
“And other times?”
The laugh slips from my lips. “I’m a fucking mess.”
“My turn.” I can’t tell if the abrupt back and forth is driven by her desire to reveal something about me or to be revealed herself. “Ask me another question.”
“Why did you drink before they could say who your brother…you know…?” Pen glances at the window seat where Chloe is asleep against the sill. She rolls, sensing our eyes, and Pen lures me onto the front porch. The breeze is warm, the night sky hidden behind grey clouds. I expect Pen to explain but instead she’s silent, proving once again that Chloe’s secrets, unlike everyone else’s, are safe with her. Beneath the light whistle of the wind, crickets chirping, I say, “You’re a good friend.”
She ignores the comment, sitting on the lid of an old paint can. “It’s your turn.”
I sit down next to her. “I’m ready.”
She narrows her eyes. “Okay, for all the marbles this one’s a two-parter. One truth and one dare.” She stares at the street, cheeks burning. When she faces me again mine are too. “Truth,” she breathes. “Do you want to kiss me?”
I don’t look away or even blink. “Yes.”
She doesn’t look away either. “Dare.” She swallows, leans in. “Do it.”
My hands move first, trusting that the only way to make them stop shaking is to press them to her skin. My thumbs graze her cheeks, fingers in her hair. It’s soft and she’s warm and for a long time I just look at her, closing the space centimeters at a time while I take in the lashes that are stuck together by mascara, the birthmark buried under her left eyebrow, the small dimple on her chin. I stare, sorting every piece into things that feel good and things that hurt like hell, into things I never want to forget and things I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure I never have to.
But before I have a chance to savor those first few breaths slipping between her lips, they’re pressed against mine, falling and climbing their way back up. I taste her lipstick, her tongue, and it makes me dizzy. Her hands are on my knees, pinning me there, and then they’re on my waist, on my shoulders, both of us gripping each other like we’re clinging to the edge of a cliff. Afraid of falling off. Or hoping that if we do, we’ll fall together.
Suddenly, Pen stops moving.
She stops breathing, my wild heartbeat the only sound.
I open my eyes and she’s not staring back. She’s staring at the street. At the car parked in front of Angel’s house, cigarette smoke slithering up from the open window, flesh and ink viper flexed against Jago’s forearm as he hangs it over the side of the door.
I’m on my feet and so is Pen. She shudders, angry, and unafraid. But I’m terrified. And not just of Jago seeing me here but of Jago seeing her. I don’t know how long he’s been watching us but I can tell by the way his mouth twitches that he knows who she is. To Ignacio Prado. To me.
The engine purrs as the car pulls forward. Just in time for Angel to step outside. For Jago to say hello to him too.
“Get inside, Pen.”
She straightens, shoulders heaving.
“Pen…”
“No.” Her stare sharpens. She charges down the steps. “He’s not gonna fucking do this.” Z
Angel wrenches her back. “Are you out of your mind?”
My heart races.
“Stay away from us!” Pen shouts, trying to tear herself from Angel’s grasp. “Stay away from the restaurant. Fucking stay away!”
She seethes but the faster her breaths, the more transparent she becomes. Beneath the anger, beneath the shock, her eyes glisten with something like fear. And it’s all my fault.
Jago hangs his head back, a whistle cutting between his smile. He leans on the gas, letting the engine growl, and then he speeds off.
Pen glares until he rounds the corner and then she finally lets Chloe pull her inside. I stay put, afraid of facing Angel. I know Jago’s been following me and because I wasn’t being careful I led him right to Angel Prado’s house. To Pen. Her rage wasn’t directed at me but what she doesn’t know is that it should have been.
“I’m sorry, Angel. I didn’t mean for—”
“It’s not you,” Angel stops me. “It’s…” he shakes his head, “it’s not you.”

FEATURED AUTHOR: LISA BECKER

ABOUT THE BOOK

In high school, Charlotte Windham was a typical student going through an awkward phase -- glasses and all. She harbored a crush on Garrett Stephens, the teen heartthrob everyone can’t help but fall for during that unfortunate ugly duckling phase of one’s teen years. Flash forward fifteen years later, and Charlotte and Garrett have a second chance encounter at a Los Angeles restaurant. However, this time around, Charlotte has leveled the playing field. She’s a bestselling novelist and no longer “Glasses,” the humiliating nickname Garrett called her in high school. In short, she’s a catch now and, thanks to corrective eye surgery, it’s not just her eyes that see better…so does her heart! Garrett hasn’t fared poorly either, transforming from teen heartbreaker to adult lothario. A now successful professional golfer, he’s recently suffered a major setback in the form of a possible career-ending injury. With the upper hand, can Charlotte forgive Garrett for his past ways, and for his more recent Don Juan lifestyle? Will she even want to? And, can Garrett change his ways for a second chance with Charlotte, who may just be the perfect fit for him?

LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT INTERVIEW WITH LISA BECKER

Hardest thing about being a writer:
Self-motivating. It is so easy to get distracted with all of the other fun things to do in life such as grocery shopping, online banking, and laundry.

Easiest thing about being a writer:
The uniform. Nothing's better than being productive in a cozy pair of sweatpants and slippers.

Things you love about where you live:
I live less than two miles from the beach and love being able to see the ocean every day, take a walk along the beach and enjoy the sea air.
Things that make you want to move:
Because my little beach town is so lovely, we endure lots of traffic and parking woes due to people wanting to visit.

Words that describe you:
I've always been described as "nice" and now that I'm a parent and living in a world where kindness seems to be in short supply, it's a label I'm proud to wear.
Words that describe you but you wish they didn’t:
"Nice." I've joked in the past that my tombstone will read, "Here lies Lisa Becker. A very nice girl." As much as I appreciate that I'm known as a "good" person, there are times it would feel good to be the bad girl.

Favorite beverage:
A margarita on the rocks with extra salt around the rim. Mmmmm.

Something that gives you a pickle face:
Beer. Believe it or not, I haven't had one since my freshman year of college.

Favorite smell:
Baking brownies.

Something that makes you hold your nose:
Pumpkin. I can't even be in the room when my kids carve them for Halloween.

Something you’re really good at:
Baking and making desserts. I have a recipe for amazing chocolate chip cookie dough truffles that are always a hit.

Something you’re really bad at: Unfortunately, I'm not so good at resisting aforementioned desserts.

Something you wish you could do:
I've always wanted to know how to professionally decorate cakes. Not only does it sound fun, but quite yummy.
Something you wish you’d never learned to do:
I wish I never learned to write compelling complaint letters that yield action. My family has taken notice and now anytime anyone has a problem with an airline, bank or retail store, I am enlisted to write their complaint letter for them.

Something you like to do:
I love to read. I could spend hours every day, sitting in a cozy chair and reading a good book. My favorites are romance novels with flawed heroes, major heart swoons and happily ever afters.

Something you wish you’d never done:
I wish I had never attempted zip lining. After hiking up a ridiculously tall mountain and careening through one course, I chickened out of the rest only to hear there was no other way down the mountain. I ended up screaming my way through a 10-rope course in Costa Rica.

Favorite places you’ve been:
My favorite place on the planet is Lizard Island, a small private island off the coast of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. It is a little slice of heaven.

Places you never want to go to again:
If I didn't need to go for hygiene reasons, I would never step foot into the dentist office again.

Things that make you happy:
My children. I have two girls - ages 12 and 10. They are smart, silly, clever and so fun to be around.

Things that drive you crazy:
My children. Didn't you notice above I have two girls - ages 12 and 10. Enough said!

Best thing you’ve ever done:
Online dating. I met my husband 17 years ago when online dating was in its infancy. Not only is he my soulmate, he also helped create the two loves of my life - our children. Our relationship also spawned my third baby; our story loosely inspired my first novel, Click: An Online Love Story.

Biggest mistake:
Letting petty family squabbles impact relationships I have with people I care about.

EXCERPT FROM LINKS

I stand but hesitate when I see Tamika's disapproving look. Fi notices as well. "It's okay, T. I got this," she says, motioning for me to follow her back. When we get to her small office, she closes the door and gestures for me to sit on a red vinyl chair, circa 1972. She stands in front of me, leaning against the desk, and crosses her arms in front of her chest. "Spill!"

"Where should I start?"

"At the beginning." She walks around to her chair behind the desk and pulls out a yellow legal pad.

For the next half hour, I go over my encounter with Garrett, from the moment we bumped into each other and he didn't recognize me, to the embarrassment of being called 'Glasses.'

Fi takes notes furiously on her pad and grins, nods, and cringes at all the appropriate times. When I finish, she puts her pen down and asks, "Do you want the 'best friend experience' or the 'brilliant legal mind experience'?"

I can't help but laugh. "Are they mutually exclusive?"

"They are," she says nodding.

"Okay. I want the best friend experience."

She rushes around from behind the desk, wraps her arms around me soothingly. "I'm so sorry, hon. That sounds just awful. Let's go get margaritas tomorrow and drown our sorrows in tequila and lime wedges."

"Thanks, Fi. You're the best."

"Anytime," she says, rubbing my back. She pulls away and walks around to the back of her desk. She sits down and puts the legal pad to the side. I can't help but notice the writing scrawled across it.

"Just for kicks, what would you have said if I had asked for the 'brilliant legal mind experience'?"

"You sure you want to know?" Her lips pull into a grim line. Honestly, I'm not sure I do want to know, but curiosity gets the better of me.

"Lay it on me," I say.

"You need to get laid. Not the kind of bland, missionary style sex you had with Alex. You need hot heat, sweating up the sheets, crazy animal sex."

I bust out laughing. "That's your brilliant legal advice. Crazy animal sex?"

"Yes. That's my brilliant legal advice," she says with complete seriousness. "Listen, hon, it's been a year since that insecure jerk Keane dumped you. I have no doubt it's been even longer since you've, well, you know." She wags her eyebrows up and down. "Before that, you only seriously dated Travis the cheater and Alex who, let's face it, despite being completely gonzo for you, was a cold fish and a bore. It's time to stop comparing every man to this fantasy of Garrett Stephens and just do it with him to get it out of your system. He asked you out for Saturday night. Go! Enjoy!"

"I don't compare every man to Garrett," I snap at her.

"Don't you?" she asks, looking down at me sternly.

"I'm offended you even suggested that." She looks at me, her sharp eyes boring into me, like she can read my every thought and knows I'm full of it. I imagine this is how she bears down on witnesses on the stand. I don't like being on the receiving end of that look.

"Even if that's true," I start and she nods her head, "and I'm not conceding it is." I point my finger at her. "Even if he did mean to ask me out, there's no way it's a good idea. He's a total player. It would only be one night of fun and I don't think I could get over that kind of hurt."

"Then you need to get over it now. Sorry for the tough love, hon, but you need to move past the fantasy of this man and find someone passionate and amazing who is deserving to love you for all of the great things you have to offer including your messed-up childhood and your incredible success today.

INTERVIEW WITH D. ALYCE DOMAIN

How did you get started writing?
I started writing out of frustration. I was in college and totally hooked on daytime soaps, and every time I got attached to a character or a super-couple, one of the actors would leave or the writers would decide to “go a different way”. The result . . . death, divorce, or a damaged character. I got into writing fan-fiction to “fix” some of the mess that Daytime writers did to my favorite heroes, heroines and couples.

Do you write every day?
I try to, yes. I find this is the best way to keep ideas fresh in my mind, and to stay sharp and to keep my writing style consistent.

What do you think is hardest aspect of writing a book?

Pre-writing, research, and preparation. I do a plot summary, an outline, timeline of events, and in some cases, scene notes that I have collected along the way. This takes time, organization and a lot of work.

What books do you currently have published?
Dominic’s Nemesis, my first publication. When Lucifer Met Calamity will be my second . . . though its unrelated.

Is writing your dream job?
Not in the way that you mean. I love writing and being creative, but my attention span will never permit me to do just one thing for the rest of my life no matter how much I love it. Burnout. I prefer to split my time doing 2-3 things that I really like . . . and writing is one of them.

Do you have any marketing tips you could pass on to indie authors?
Don’t make your book free. I think this is a bad trend that de-values writing, books, and authors. A better, more effective option (in my humble opinion) is to do a small giveaway of a set number of copies (1 to 5) and to use this to increase awareness, recognition and interest in reading the book. The readers who enter the giveaway should be required to give an e-mail, or like your FB page or something and write a review or something.  Nothing is free and certainly not a book which requires months of time and effort to write. Making it a free download for any and everybody, is just selling your self short.

How do you feel about Facebook?

Love it!

What’s one thing you never leave the house without.
Earrings in my ears. hate a naked lobe.

What do you love about where you live?
The mild winters! I hate being cold. I hate cold weather. I hate winter colors. You get the picture.

I do! What's your favorite treat for movie night?

Caramel popcorn

What’s your favorite beverage?

It’s a toss up between Ginger Ale and hot chocolate.

What is one of your happiest moments?
When I finally finished with school . . . for good. *Happy Dance*

What do you like to do when there’s nothing to do?
Read/Write/watch a movie . . . not TV, a movie.

Do you give your characters any of your bad traits?
They have some of my traits . . . I’m not sure I would classify them as bad traits, just quirks of mine.

What’s your favorite/most visited Internet site?

Internet Movie Database, love it . . . visit everyday.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to write?
Essays for college and grad school applications. *ugh* I didn’t like the topics most of them force me to write. They just seemed so phony.

How do you like your pizza?
On a wheat crust, with only veggie toppings, and made by a real pizzeria. I don’t do fast food pizza.

What’s your favorite color?
It’s a toss up between purple and red.

What’s your biggest pet peeve about writing?
First person narrative. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I don’t like it unless it's done right. I’ve found that very few books really benefit from this point of view.   I, myself, would never write in first person. I just can’t give up the versatility of third-person omniscient.

What is your favorite movie?
It’s a toss up between Dead Again and LA Confidential. They never get old.

What are you working on now?
The sequel to Dominic’s Nemesis, which will be book 2 in The Ambrosi Legacy Series.

FEATURED AUTHOR: ROSA TEMPLE

ABOUT THE BOOK

Career minded, Natalie Spencer, had never been in love. She could never understand what all the fuss was about. But when she met Jackson Humphries during Fresher’s Week at University, that all changed.

Utterly infatuated, Natalie quickly discovers the meaning of love and, before she knows it, she's heading up the aisle – for the first time, that is.

This is a tale about four wedding dresses, a runaway groom and a girl who got so carried away, she couldn’t see true love staring her right in the face.

INTERVIEW WITH ROSA TEMPLE

Rosa, what's your favorite thing about the writing process?
It has to be the feeling of freedom it gives me when an idea comes to mind and I can just run with it and let my imagination go wild. It’s one of the best ways I have of winding down. Even if I start a story and I don’t finish, it’s okay because I had a surge of creativity and for the time I was writing I might have been anywhere in the world and meeting people (albeit on paper) I could never hope to meet. How great is that?

Pretty great! What books do you currently have published?
I have a novella called, Sleeping With You Best Friend which was published last year. Natalie’s Getting Married will be my first full length novel to be published.

Is writing your dream job?
Yes it is. It took a while to get here, but I’ve finally found the thing that makes me want to get out of bed in the morning, even though the money is awful.

How often do you tweet?

I’m a fits and starts tweeter. I’ll think I have something important to say and I’ll say it again and again on Twitter. But then I’ll go a week to ten days and never tweet at all. I think that’s bad practice but I never said I was a good tweeter. I do re-tweet as much as I can though.

What five things would you never want to live without?
Music. There is no such thing as a world without music. I listen to all kinds but my favorite is jazz and soul. Books. What would life be without some stimulating material to sink your teeth into? Chocolate. But only the good kind; dark with 80% cocoa. I’ll take Belgian or Swiss, thank you. Red wine. Need I say more? And lastly, floss. Did you know plaque can cause heart attacks?

Good to know! What’s your favorite fast food?
I’m a Londoner, so it’s good old fish and chips without a doubt. But it has to be bought in the right place. My favorite chippy is always busy on a Friday evening. I’m talking queues out the door. But please don’t get me wrong, I don’t have fish and chips every Friday – my skinny jeans wouldn’t allow it.

What do you wish you could do?
I wish I could get to grips with social media and technology. I manage to have a blog, a Twitter account and a Facebook page and that’s it. Some people have endless on-line platforms and I wonder: a) how do you even use things like Pinterest and Instagram? and b) how do you find the time?

I don’t even know how to use half the functions on my phone – any picture I take is dark and foggy. Seriously, I could have an album full of complete strangers for all the good I am at technology. Yes I wish to be more technologically minded.

What do you like to do when there’s nothing to do?

Easy. Watch terrible films on television. That’s what Channel 5 and all its sister channels were made for. A cup of tea and an awful, predictable, badly acted film with a lousy cast is somehow really refreshing to me. Do you know the type I mean? The ones that went straight to television because who in their right mind would pay good money to see them at the cinema? I go for the love story dramas, they’re the best kind. They have titles like: The Girl He Met On Line, Her Biggest Mistake or Dangerous Lessons. I’d love to be in one of those films.

Would you rather be a movie star, sports star, or rock star?
This is mean, why can’t I be all of them? Okay I choose rock star. If I were a rock star, chances are I’d be pretty fit so I looked good in music videos making the sports star option a waste of time. Also, as a rock star there’s a pretty good chance I might get asked to do a movie. Yes! I can have it all.

Brilliant! Do you procrastinate?
Oh yes! You know how many fitness regimes, healthy eating plans, learning of new languages etc I’ve put off? Only about a million. If I hadn’t procrastinated I would have been a saxophone playing, roller-blading, ballet dancer who tap dances and plays the bongos, is fluent in five different languages, and is very often seen in the lead role of the local amateur dramatics society production and has read War and Peace.

I see your point. What’s in your refrigerator right now?
Right, just had a quick check. It’s the end of the week so not much in there right now. I have a bowl of apples – should have been having an apple a day but only managed two. Chicken breasts defrosting for my casserole tomorrow. Half a punnet of blueberries for my healthy, daily smoothies – of which I managed to make one this week. Rice milk, low fat and mine; cow’s milk, full fat and everyone else’s. The dregs of some juice in a bottle – don’t know why my son couldn’t have just finished it. Garlic, ginger. Two kinds of spread, one low fat one heart attack packed. Fast acting pain relief gel and some satsumas.

What choices in life would you like to have a redo on?
This might be shallow but I wish I’d never given up piano. I don’t know why I stopped. I began taking lessons as an adult and I bought myself an electric piano. Maybe it was lack of time but my piano now sits in the corner of my writing room, gathering dust. I have lots of musician friends who come over to my place and sit and tinkle out a tune on my piano, and I’ve forgotten how. I think, somehow, it would have been a nice interlude between writing to sit and play a tune, don’t you? Maybe I’ll start again . . .

I think you should! What’s one of your favorite quotes?

I did come across some writing quotes that helped to inspire me whenever I might have been blocked or running out of steam. In particular this one struck a chord because of how tough writing can get sometimes:
“It is perfectly okay to write garbage – as long as you edit brilliantly.” - C J Cherryh

Very true. You have a personal chef for the night. What would you ask him to prepare?
In the UK there is a program called Masterchef (probably there are versions all over the world). If I’m not too busy I’ll watch the series, and for some reason I am transfixed by people cooking in a kitchen. Why? I don’t know, but I get fascinated by cookery terms like: friccasee, compote, en croute, and jus! So my personal chef would cook a fish dish – because I never cook fish well – using any of those fancy styles. But I’d simply have to have a dessert that involved masses of chocolate, or should I say chocolat?

Describe yourself in 5 words.
Beautiful, multi-talented, super-fit, ambidextrous . . .  and a big fat liar.

Good one! What is your favorite movie?
This is hard to pin down. I always claim that this is Breakfast At Tiffanys, but then I might watch another firm favorite, like one of the ‘Before’ Trilogy, and swear blind that this is the one. I guess the answer changes depending on what sort of mood I’m in.

Understandable. What are you working on now?

Right now my brain is working overtime on new stories I’d love to write. I’ve already started two new books. The first is an idea for a Christmas novel which came to me at (guess when?) Christmas, and I had to start scribbling away. I more or less have the whole outline mapped out in my head and just need to get it down. Alongside that, I started writing the novel I’d like to publish next year. Both are romantic comedies but with serious undertones. I was struck by comments of Natalie’s Getting Married when reviewers said they laughed and cried along with my heroine, and I’d love to re-capture those emotions in my next books.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rosa Temple began writing romantic comedies and chick lit because of her passion for what she calls the 'early chick lit films', like: Sabrina, Barefoot In the Park and Breakfast at Tiffany's. She honed her skills as a ghost writer, gaining experience writing romantic novellas, both sweet and on the slightly steamy side. In her notebooks, she constantly jotted down story ideas of her own, and she eventually completed her first novella Sleeping With Your Best Friend and now, the full length novel, Natalie's Getting Married.
Rosa Temple is a Londoner and is married with two sons. She is a reluctant keep fit fanatic and doer of housework and insists that writing keeps her away from such strenuous tasks. She spends her days creating characters and story lines while drinking herbal tea and eating chocolate biscuits.

FEATURED AUTHOR: SHIRLEEN DAVIES

ABOUT THE BOOK

Cassie MacLaren has come a long way since being dumped by her long-time boyfriend, a man she believed to be her future. Successful in her job at MacLaren Enterprises, dreaming of one day leading one of the divisions, she’s moved on to start a new relationship, having little time to dwell on past mistakes.

Matt Garner loves his job as rodeo representative for Double Ace Bucking Stock. Busy days and constant travel leave no time for anything more than the occasional short-term relationship—which is just the way he likes it. He’s come to accept the regret of leaving the woman he loved for the pro rodeo circuit.
The future is set for both, until a chance meeting ignites long buried emotions neither is willing to face.

Forced to work together, their attraction grows, even as multiple arson fires threaten Cassie’s new home of Cold Creek, Colorado. Although Cassie believes the danger from the fires is remote, she knows the danger Matt poses to her heart is real.

While fighting his renewed feelings for Cassie, Matt focuses on a new and unexpected opportunity offered by MacLaren Enterprises — an opportunity that will put him on a direct collision course with Cassie.

Will pride and self-preservation control their future? Or will one be strong enough to make the first move, risking everything, including their heart?

No Getting Over You, book seven in the MacLarens of Fire Mountain Contemporary series, is a full-length novel with an HEA.

EXCERPT FROM NO GETTING OVER YOU

Staring at the MacLaren family pictures on the wall, Matt waited for Cassie to join him. It had been over thirty minutes, and given her usual insistence on being punctual, he had to attribute the lag to a desire to let him stew. It didn’t faze him one bit. He’d wait her out, no matter how late it got. At some point, she’d have to face him.

“Okay, I’m here now. What do you want to discuss?” Cassie breezed into the room, not making eye contact as she lowered herself into a chair.

Matt held her gaze, uncaring of how stern his next words would sound. “Your thoughts on the changes. Specifically, if you’ll be able to accept I’m your boss and you’ll be reporting to me.”

“And if I don’t?” She lifted her chin, daring him to threaten her.

“You’ll be gone, the same as anyone else.”

Cassie blinked, knowing if she didn’t produce results, her father would agree to a termination. He’d give her no special privileges. Treating family different than regular employees wasn’t tolerated at MacLaren Enterprises. You were professional, showed respect, and did your job. No excuses. If not, you were gone.

“Fine.” She stood, turning toward the door.

“Hold on a minute, Cass.”

“What? There’s more?”

“I want to know what you mean by fine. Are you saying you’ve bought into the program and are on board? I don’t want any misunderstandings between us.” He took a step forward, then stopped when he saw her eyes narrow in frustration . . . or resentment . . . or possibly desire. He couldn’t tell which.

All she wanted was to leave. Get out the door and away from Matt. She’d made him wait for her to join him, not because of the changes, but because her traitorous heart wouldn’t stop pounding like a bass drum. Being this close to him did dangerous things to her body. Breathing became difficult, labored, the walls closing in around her. Ever since she’d spotted him coming through the front door, she’d fought the attraction so hazardous to her health. She could deal with him, but only if he kept his distance and didn’t require face time. Taking a couple steps closer, she tilted her face up, fisting her hands at her sides.

“What I’m saying is I’ll report to you and do my best to meet your expectations. But I’m warning you, Matt. If you start feeding bullcrap reports about my work to Dad and the others, there will be hell to pay!” Cassie’s face reddened as her eyes sparked
Holding up his hands, palms out, he took a step back. “Calm down, Cassie. No one is trying to sabotage you.

“Oh, right. That’s easy for you to say. You waltz in here after disappearing for years, and all of a sudden, you’re the golden boy, handed a promotion which vaults you above Sean, Skye, or even me. We’ve all been paying our dues. What the hell have you done?”

Crossing her arms and planting her feet, she glared at him, daring him to explain.

“I didn’t ask Heath for a job. He came to me. What would you have done?”

Without missing a beat, she took a step toward him, stopping within inches of his face. “I would’ve realized I’d be jumping headfirst into a firestorm. Do you have any idea what it’s like to be in my position with the change? Of course you don’t. You’re still a selfish sonofabitch without a clue of how your actions affect others. It’s always all about Matt and what he wants. No one else matters, and no one gets in your way. Well, I have news for you, hotshot. Your job won’t be some easy ride where you can float to the top on Skye’s and my achievements. You damn well better show everyone how good you are or you’ll be out on your butt just like anyone else.” Her voice had hardened with each sentence until she’d gotten out the ball of frustration knotted inside her.

The clear combination of anger, betrayal, and pain on her face hit Matt like a punch in the gut. He’d had his share of disappointments, knowing how it felt to be shoved aside
“Cassie . . . I — ”

“Save it, Matt. I’ll do the best I can, but it won’t be for you. My best will never be for your benefit ever again.” Turning, she froze at the sight of Heath, Jace, and Rafe standing in the doorway. Pushing past them, she didn’t explain further. She was certain they hadn’t missed a word.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Shirleen Davies has been writing most of her life, but only recently began the transition into fiction. Historical romance, contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and short stories are what keep her reading, so that is the focus of her writing.

She was born in California, grew up between a growing beach town and a small town at the base of the San Bernardino mountains. Her mother originally planned to name her Katherine, but she read an article in the paper about a woman named Shirleen shortly before her birth, so instead of having a cool nickname, like Kate, she is simply Shirleen. Her mainstays growing up were all the Nancy Drew mystery books; she loved them. Eventually she moved on to mysteries, suspense stories, crime novels, and romance. Pride and Prejudice will always be one of her favorites.

Besides California, life changes have allowed Shirleen to live in Oregon, Colorado, and Arizona. Everywhere she has lived has been inspirational in one way or another, giving her the opportunity to meet remarkable people with their own stories to tell. She’s sailed, skied, owned horses plus lots of other animals, and ridden various off-road vehicles. She enjoys dancing, fishing, hunting, being the back-seater on her husband's Harley, traveling and, of course, reading and writing.

Prior to transitioning to writing fiction, Shirleen worked for Fortune 500 and many smaller, start-up companies. Fortunately, she regained my sanity long enough to start her own consulting firm, which she still maintains today.

Shirleen’s husband and she spend most of their time at their main home in the mountains of Arizona and their second home in Southern California. Between them, they have five boys with growing careers and families of their own. So, from her perspective, her life is a success and always an adventure. She wouldn't change a thing; well, except finding more time to write.

FEATURED AUTHOR: BREIGH FORSTNER

ABOUT THE BOOK

This is a story about a girl discovering and experiencing life for the first time.
Bryn Schaefler grew up rich. Her parents expected the best out of her, picked her boyfriend for her, and groomed her to be the next trophy wife fresh out of high school.

But when they discover she wants to pursue music instead of following in her mothers footsteps, they wanted to hear nothing about it.

That was when Bryn left for good.

By chance, she auditioned for main stream rock band Everlasting. Never in a million years did she think she would make it.

Cale Pelton knew it was his fault for the band scrambling around to find a new guitarist. Once he saw Bryn audition, he knew he had to have her. Not just in the band, but in his mind, body and soul.

INTERVIEW WITH BREIGH FORSTNER

Breigh, how did you get started writing?

I’ve been writing ever since I was younger, I would say I was 12 when I started? I was big into horror movies so I wrote a short horror story that was actually kind of decent at the time, and I wish I would have kept it!

What's your favorite thing about the writing process?

Writing the very last chapter and typing “The End!”

What books do you currently have published?
I have 3 books in my Straight from the Heart series, which were originally self-published, but will be re-published by Booktrope.

If you could only watch one television station for a year, what would it be?
Hmm . . . that’s tough. I would have to say Lifetime for the heck of it.

How often do you tweet?
A few times a week. It’s not my main source of communication to my readers and other authors/bloggers, but I do like to use it.

How do you feel about Facebook?
I’m addicted, I can’t lie. I am on Facebook every night after my kids are in bed, even when I’m supposed to be writing.

YouTube is . . .  Fantastic! I put together a playlist of some of my favorite songs for when I’m writing that suit the books and characters I’m writing.

What do you love about where you live?

Port Huron is right along the water, and I live about five minutes away from the Blue Water Bridge, which connects Michigan to Canada. I love walking along the boardwalk every once in a while, seeing how beautiful the lake water is.

Do you write every day?
Yes I try to. Even if it’s 1,000 or only a couple of hundred, I get as much writing as I can in.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
Introvert for sure. I’m a very shy, quiet person, and I like to keep a lot of things to myself.

What's your favorite treat for movie night?
Buttery popcorn!

What is the most daring thing you've done?

Got a tattoo on each of my wrists and died my hair black within one weekend.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to write?
The hardest thing I’ve had to write about is another idea that I am working on right now and it has to do with a very tough topic (abortion). The topic hits me at home and is a very sensitive subject to me.

Where is your favorite library, and what do you love about it?

I haven’t  been to that many libraries (sadly!) but my favorite one is the one that is in my hometown: St. Clair County Community College
.

What’s the worst thing someone has said about your writing? How did you deal with it?
The worst thing (that I know of) was someone said my book was written like a 14-year-old’s writing, completely unrealistic. It was hard for me to take, but I took the criticism and just continued to work on my books and my writing.

What's your relationship with your cell phone?
It’s glued to my side. . . haha. I’m on it way too much more often then I should be, I consider it a lifeline sometimes.

How many hours of sleep do you get a night?

I try to get about 7, maybe 8 hours of sleep. It depends on how late I stay up at night.

Do you have a favorite book?

It’s a tossup between Collide and Pulse by Gail McHugh, or The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden by Jessica Sorensen.

How about a favorite book that was turned into a movie? Did the movie stink?
The Harry Potter Series. I never got into the last 2 movies, but the rest of them were amazing, and of course I loved the books.

Do you sweat the small stuff?
I’m a big stresser and a worrywart. I try not to sweat the small stuff, but I’m one of those people that doesn’t like to make mistakes and likes to make people happy.

What are you working on now? I’m working on the fourth book in the Straight from the Heart Series, called Trusting My Heart. I also have a few other WIP’s I’m working with but Trusting My Heart is my main focus.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Breigh currently lives with her two daughters and fiancée in Southeast Michigan, north of Detroit, just minutes from the Blue Water Bridge. She works during the day, but at night she’s a writing machine. Author of the Straight from the Heart Series, she loves to write about female leads and rockers, adding a heavy musical influence to her books.

FEATURED AUTHOR: M.J. SCHILLER

ABOUT THE BOOK

Max. The consummate ladies’ man.
He’s good looking, but not an absolute knockout. With Max’s charm though, he could have any woman he wants. Once he meets Faith, he doesn’t want anyone else.

Eli. He is a knockout.
But a dark past shadows him and holds him captive. Drinking dulls the pain, but meeting Faith makes him want to change all that.

Faith. She loves them both.
When a blackout brings her together with Eli, she’s happier than she’s ever been before. When another blackout tears them apart, Max is there to pick up the pieces. But can she forget the man who first made her whole?

INTERVIEW WITH M.J. SCHILLER

M.J., how long have you been a writer?
As long as I can remember. In second grade I wrote a thrilling book entitled – wait for it – The Black Cat. It was written on blue hotel stationary my dad brought home from a business trip, because I thought it was pretty. The binding was white yarn bows threaded through holes I’d punched in the paper. The girl down the street, Mary Ellen Murphey, co-authored it. She was also my partner in a buckeye business that never quite took off.

How long is your to-be-read list?
Never ending! I’m fortunate to know a lot of great writers and unfortunate to not be independently wealthy. I try to keep at it, though!

You have a day job . . . how do you find time to write?
Luckily, my day job is a lunch lady, so I’m off at one o’clock. I come home, take a nap, and then get to work.

For what would you like to be remembered?

For raising four happy adults.

What scares you the most?

Mice! I freak out so badly I often injure myself while running away. I know they can’t hurt me, but they could run up my leg. They skitter. That’s just not natural. And phobias aren’t logical.

YouTube is . . . a place where you can get lost!

What five things would you never want to live without?

My husband and four kids.

Who would you want to narrate a film about your life?
Morgan Freeman. Is there any other choice?

Nope, I don't think so. Are you an introvert or an extrovert?

Depends on the day. Mostly an introvert, but I karaoke, so I guess I have a bit of the extrovert in me.

What is the most daring thing you've done?
Climbed over a twenty-foot fence, in the rain, in my rock and roll boots, to get backstage at a rock concert.

What is the stupidest thing you've ever done?

See above.

Sadly, those two questions often do go hand in hand. What is your most embarrassing moment?
Once, when I was in church, praying devoutly, my daughter asked me, “Why do you have a sock on your shoulder?” I had been sorting laundry when we left the house and must have slung the sock there and forgotten about it!

That's totally a harried-mom thing to do! What choices in life would you like to have a redo on?
I would have liked to study writing in college and started pursuing it earlier in life.

What’s one of your favorite quotes?

“The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.'" Or "Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup." Or "All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us ... they can't get away this time."
-- Louis B. "Chesty" Puller, Lt. Gen., USMC  Talk about a positive attitude!

You can be any fictional character for one day. Who would you be?

Beth Donovan from Trapped Under Ice, because then rock star Chad Evans would love me!

What is your favorite movie?
What About Bob?

Do you have a favorite book?
A Tale of Two Cities
.

Do you sweat the small stuff?
I did before I had triplets.

How long is your to-do list?

It is infinite.

What are you working on now?
The third and final installment of my Romantic Knights trilogy, A Knight to Remember.

Lightning round:

Cake or frosting? Oooh! Toughie! . . . Cake!
Laptop or desktop? laptop
Chevy Chase or Bill Murray? Both are comic geniuses, but I’m going to have to go Bill Murray.
Emailing or texting? Texting. More interactive.
Indoors or outdoors? In.
Tea: sweet or unsweet? I don’t do tea. I’m more of a Diet Pepsi girl.
Plane, train, or automobile? Plane. Farther, faster.
